Architecture Book Award for Frei Otto 1925–2015. Building with Nature

The saai team is delighted to receive the Architecture Book Award for the book Frei Otto 1925–2015. Building with Nature, edited by Anna Maria Meister and Joaquín Medina Warmburg together with Mechthild Ebert and Martin Kunz.
The book was awarded first prize in the category Practice Monograph. Published on the occasion of Frei Otto’s 100th birthday, the book examines his role as an architect, engineer, and educator, and recontextualizes his ideas on biotechnics, Modernism, and experimental building. The jury praised the publication as a carefully produced and historically significant work that traces Frei Otto’s career through key projects and opens up new perspectives on his oeuvre. They emphasized that the book represents a timely reappraisal of a formative figure in architectural history whose influence had at times receded into the background.
Anna Maria Meister and Joaquín Medina Warmburg are co directors of the saai. Anna Maria Meister is Professor of Architectural Theory, and Joaquín Medina Warmburg is Professor of Construction and Architectural History at the KIT Faculty of Architecture. Mechthild Ebert and Martin Kunz are members of the saai’s academic team.
